Yesterday I asked,
What am I willing to endure for You?

Today the Church honours another twenty-six martyrs —
St Paul Miki and his companions.

I ask myself again,
could I endure as much as they did?

In response,
You place before me
a different question.

Will I commit
to being a godparent?
Day after day.
Year after year.
To journey
with the Catechumen who will soon be Elect,
then Neophyte,
and later,
a fellow pilgrim in the Christian life.

Lord,
St Agatha,
St Paul Miki and his companions
approached their final hour in love and in imitation of You.
I am not worthy of such an hour.

But teach me to live for You,
and to be a worthy godparent
in thousands of ordinary days.
