Today I spent more than four hours
on mundane administrative work.
Expenditure reports.
Budget projections for the new semester.
Spreadsheets. Calculations. Forecasts.
By evening,
I felt my day had not been well-spent.
It did not feel spiritual or impactful.
It did not feel like I had “served” in any visible way.
And yet I know
this tedious work matters.
Because these numbers
represent students
who would otherwise never afford university.
Still, as I knelt in church,
feeling exhausted
and somewhat useless,
I asked:
Did this please You?
And in the liturgy,
the first reading answered:
Thus says the LORD:
Share your bread with the hungry,
shelter the oppressed and the homeless;
clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn your back on your own.
